Lee Jung-hyun may have made her return to film acting with NIGHT FISHING, but it was with Alice In Earnestland that her acting truly took wing. The role of Sunam in this black comedy seemed tailor-made for Lee, playing a character who tries her best in her given environment but suffers only betrayal by the world—before unwittingly finding herself becoming a serial killer. Indeed, director Ahn Goocjin said that he wrote the script with Lee in mind as an actor capable of portraying both grotesque madness and delicate lovability at the same time. Lee, for her part, chose to take on the role after being drawn by Sunam's power as a female character driving the entire film. The result, as many know, was a rewarding one: Ahn's feature debut with Alice In Earnestland won him top honors in the Korean Competition at the 16th JEONJU International Film Festival, while Lee won as best female actor in a leading role at the 3rd Wildflower Film Awards and the 36th Blue Dragon Film Awards. A cynical and incisive exploration of the inner parts of Korean society, this film is making its return to Jeonju after 10 years, while actor Lee Jung-hyun and director Ahn Goocjin are set to share some fascinating recollections.
