Where Is Ronny... unfolds in places where the desires of Koreans and landowners, and those of immigrants with dreams of Korea clash violently with each other and betrayals are rampant. The director of a private Taekwondo academy on the verge of closing down is planning to rebuild his academy by holding a Taekwondo demonstration event. But his plan comes to nothing when Ronny defeats him with just one kick and destroys his pride. With his pride hurt and obsessed with revenge, he goes around looking for Ronny. In the meantime, he meets Ttui, an immigrant laborer. Neither the Taekwondo director nor Ttui have any countermeasure. Giving up everything else, the director only looks for Ronny, who is like an absent virtual image. Ttui clings to the director, saying that he will find Ronny. But the truth is that he does not know where Ronny is. Their strange encounter results in an awkward but harmonized relationship. This is an interesting buddy film. The best attraction of this film is that it persuasively presents the compelling changes of the Taekwondo director from a man bullying Ttui by saying, “Go back to your own country,” into a man shouting madly, “I am his protector and friend!” This process of change is persuasive enough for the audience to feel happy as they watch the laughing face of the Taekwondo director visiting Ttui’s house at his hometown. In a fascinating way this film lays out the pressing issues facing Korea as a multicultural society.
