Review

Susa is a 12 year-old boy living in a suburban part of Georgia, helping his mother who works at an illegal vodka brewery by delivering the product to back street bars. Robbed by thugs and chased by policemen, he manages to endure his burdened life with the hope that he will one day leave for the big city after his father’s return. Is his dream just around the corner? The film portrays the daily hopes, frustrations, resistance and survival of a dreaming boy in the Neorealist tradition of The Bicycle Thief. Drawing on a miraculous performance by its non-professional child lead, the film foregrounds the boy’s daily life with acute sensitivity while critically examining various socio-political aspects of modern Georgia. In the end, the boy’s daily odyssey through the ruined city is like a reprimand against the adults who have all but given up hope. Protecting the dream may be just as important as its realization, at least for Susa....
