Review

Before the Full Moon is a documentary that recorded the honorable death strike of the employees of Ssang Yong Motors. The strike first started on May 22nd, 2009. From July 16th, the governmental authority cut the doctors´ entrance, gas connection and water supply. And on July 21st, the police began to quell in full-scale. At dawn on July 22nd, the 62nd day since strike has begun, the Production team entered the factory, which was cut off from everything, and taped the workers there for 16 days. The screen shows the urgent condition facing governmental authority, isolated days, and interview of the workers. They talk about the longing toward their family and frustration toward the stubborn company, while the narration calmly explains what is going on inside. The strength of this documentary lies in the way of seeing people. It does not push warlike confrontations to the extreme to make the film more tense and alive. Rather, it shows the ordinary people: a husband who is forced to let his wife alone prepare their daughter´s one year birthday party, and a father that has a daughter who particularly likes him. Through voice-over narration, the film tells us that it´s a story of our own, not theirs. In such situation in which major power name people with just some numbers in redundancy for the exclusive interest of capitalism, this documentary grimly shows that ‘dismissal is no less than murder’.
