This documentary follows Evan and Helen, a mother and son stand-up comedy duo based in San Francisco. Helen hopes that Evan will understand her background growing up in Beijing and recognize that his comfortable life is a legacy from ancestors. Evan, on the other hand, is more interested in the typical teenage life of arcades and shopping malls than in family history. Still, their identity as immigrants remains significant. Between Helen, a second-generation immigrant and single mother, and Evan, a third-generation immigrant, their approaches to their roots are so much different yet remarkably similar. Comedy Family Style is an affectionate documentary—both a touching journey of a mother and son as well as a survival story of two (ethnic) stand-up comedians. From whichever perspective, the film leaves much to ponder regarding race, culture, generation, and the context of change. (Molly KIM)
