Review

The younger sister of the main character, who is behind the camera, is bringing up a baby as a single mother. Little by little, the history of the family is revealed. They had moved to Canada but came back to their homeland, Korea. Other members of the family are adjusting to their new life but that isn’t the case for the director’s younger sister. Their mother defends her daughter unconditionally whereas the father is dissatisfied with his daughter, a single mother. The same goes for the younger sister who thinks she was hurt severely several times by her father who never lost the male-dominated attitude despite his long time outside of Korea. Despite this is a story of his real-life family, the director does not involve himself personally in the storytelling but patiently follows each member’s stories. Their story is the painful history of the patriarchal system in Korean families as well as a reflection of modern Korean history. The fact that the director’s mother is related to Pastor Moon Ik-hwan acts as a background element in the family moving back to Korea. The family had for a long time been unable to shake off ghosts of their past but they start to change as the sister’s baby grows bigger. The family members do manage to develop and grow and are eventually able to embrace each other with genuine warmth. They realize that their wounds were not formed from each other and they start to live a second phase of their lives, facing the present with courage.
