On October 30, 2022, Brazil's presidential election ended with former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva narrowly defeating incumbent Jair Bolsonaro by just 1.8%. Lula's supporters called it a triumph for democracy, while Bolsonaro's far-right base cried fraud. Then, on January 8, 2023, shortly after Lula's inauguration, rioters stormed Brazil's Supreme Court and Congress. This film documents the turbulent journey from campaign season to the Brasília riots, featuring both Lula's campaign volunteers and Bolsonaro's fervent supporters, and the political landscape and social mood of a polarized nation. For South Korean audiences, watching this film will be like looking into a mirror, as it reflects back to us of the dangers of hate in a divided society. Remarkably, Brazil had used electronic voting machines for 26 years as of the film's production in 2023. (CHUN Jinsu)
