About Pleasure and Hysteria-The Sexual Life of the Belgians, Part
Director_ Jan Bucquoy
Belgium 2000 84min 35mm color feature
Review

You can not endure your society. This society where everything is decided by money value, this sad, dull world. If you can deal with the filth of this society without taking drugs, we might as call you our hero. This militant propaganda, , is a proclamation of defiance aimed towards those whose emotional, intellectual, sexual lives are completely barren. An ideal society for the post 68 generation director Jan Bucquoy is a society based not on labor, but on happiness and pleasure. Jan Bucquoy plays the role of the anarchist in the film. The anarchist even declares a coup d´ etat. The D-day is May 21st, year 2005. The coup d´ etat of revolution will begin and the struggle for pleasure will continue. Bucquoy is not only a born demagogue but a lady´s man who does not know shame. Just like its sub-heading, "The sexual lives of Belgians part 4", between the incitements there are scenes depicting the director who, by asking constant questions about sex and love to the young actresses who came for audition, tries to seduce them. This film about the film itself clearly shows the influences of Godard, and it is definitely a "Post-Godard film". However, it seems he is trying to be Godard who is more faithful to the instinct rather than intelligence. Because of the, Bucquoy´s film has become a film essay about the pleasures of life and the film, and about pleasure and hysteria. In short, is has become a licentious book of ideology. Like the scene where Bucquoy discusses with a naked actress about Godard´s , Bucquoy learned everything from Godard. However, while Godard made his films political, Bucquoy made an obscene political film.
