Review

Aleph is a collection of 17 short novels written by Jorge Luis Borges, the master of 20th century literature. Iva Radivojević, who was born in Yugoslavia and currently works in the United States, was inspired by this collection to make this film, which is her second feature after Evaporating Borders (2014). Aleph is a fantastic, abstract, and philosophical “cinepoem”, at the same time a global project filmed in Greenland, Thailand, Mexico, and South Africa. At first glance, it may seem like a collection of short films, but the narration reveals that they are loosely connected to each other. The film narrator is Anne Waldman, a legendary poet who has published more than 30 poetry collections and who is a practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism as well. [CHUN Jinsu]
