Review

This is a new film from Laurent Cantet, whose film The Class won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008 and Foxfire opened the JEONJU IFF in 2013. Arthur Rambo is based on the Mehdi Meklat case, which caused a stir in France in 2017. Karim D., a second-generation Algerian immigrant living in the suburbs of Paris, writes a novel about his family’s settlement in France and becomes a literary sensation. His book receives acclaim, and he receives an offer to direct the film adaptation of his book. Karim seems to be walking on clouds, but suddenly a series of anti-Semitic, racist, homophobic, and misogynistic tweets he wrote in the past under the name “Arthur Rambo” (Meklat, on whom this film is based, used the name “Marcelin Deschamps”) surfaces and he takes a fall from grace. This film has a lot of implications for our society today, when rising to fame through social media and receiving criticism because of social media have become daily occurrences. [CHUN Jinsu]

He excels at finding complex, human stories that reveal the inner workings of France’s institutions. He explored the workplace in Human Resources (1999) and education in The Class (2008), which he won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and The Workshop (2017). His latest film, Arthur Rambo, deals with the media.
