The action genre draws the audience's interest with the strange charm created by body movements more than dialogue. In particular, when this genre meets the direction of Tan Chui Mui of the Malaysian New Wave Cinema, the detailed physical pain and breathing of the main character are revealed, causing tension. Produced as part of the “Back to Basics” project with a funding of KRW 200 million provided by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society, this film features a large number of independent filmmakers and friends of the director. It tells the story of Roger, a director who wants to make something like an Asian version of The Bourne Identity, casts Moon, a retired actor who lives with a child after her divorce. As the lead actor in an action movie, Moon takes up kung fu since she has to perform the martial arts scenes herself. The stories that emerge in Roger and Moon's conversation during the making of the movie make up the second half of this film, leading to an interesting twist. Barbarian Invasion is a charming film that shows the philosophical implications of the Way of Kung Fu and the notion that the soul is the prison of the body. [Sue KIM]
