BENEDICTION depicts the life of a real 20th century poet, Siegfried Sassoon but the film falls closer to something akin to Marcel Proust’s narrative style than that of a conventional biopic. The poet's memories flow with sentimentality from the present to the past and from war to ordinary life. With classical and sophisticated mastery, Terence Davies presents moments of the world and history changing through the characters who change the fates of their own lives. This film contains stories of lives that could have been different, love of days past that stubbornly refuses to disappear, and painful memories that remain vivid even after the years have passed.
