Myung-eun, a 12-year-old girl, is ashamed of her parents. She is ashamed that they sell salted fish in the market and wants to hide their very worldly desires like “only interested in money.” When her teacher asks her, elected class president, to meet with her parents, she lies to him that her parents don't have time for the excuse of her deceased grandmother. She becomes a liar brazen enough to make fake parents, but her life begins to change when twin sisters transfer to her school. The change in her life comes through writing. When the twin sisters get good grades in an essay contest with writings that reveal their lives as they are, she is in trouble. The Hill of Secrets depicts the conflict that Myung-eun, addicted to lies, goes through to write a story that emphasizes “truth” as an important value. It's a story about innocent children, but it touches the heart of the adult audience as well. [MOON Seok]
