Born and raised in Chuncheon, Ju-a is a bold middle school student, eager to try everything she dreams of. Ju-a harbors mixed feelings toward Chuncheon. It's her hometown and where she makes her life, but it's also a tourist destination, always crowded with visitors from outside, especially adulterous couples. She isn't even fond of the landmark Soyanggang Girl Statue. Among countless films depicting a teenage girl's discontent and rebellion against an absurd world, what makes A Girl Who is Afraid of Turning to Stone stand out is its detailed and heartfelt portrayal of Chuncheon as a vivid, tangible place. The film playfully twists the usual perception of so-called “tourist destinations,” and it clearly resonates with the audience.
