After returning from the UK, Chang-seok encounters various people while preparing to publish his novel. He shares a cigarette with Yoo-jin, an employee of a publishing company, and listens to her story about her past. He runs into Sung-ha, a photographer struggling to save his dying wife. At a bar, he chats with Ju-eun, a bartender, about writing and notetaking; she says it is her last day at work. All of these stories may be part of Chang-seok's novel. Shades of the Heart combines director KIM Jongkwan's styles and pushes them to the extreme. The film breaks down the boundaries between reality and fantasy, life and death, and even reality and fiction. The first episode clearly demonstrates this. Mi-young and Chang-seok have a conversation at an old underground cafe. Who is Mi-young? As the scene changes, faces and stories from the past fill the screen with wonder. The film ends similarly. Because everyone is a wounded soul. (LEE Sangyong)
