Camila José Donoso, known for her acclaimed films Naomi Campbel (2013) and Casa Roshell (2017), presents her new work. Nona: If They Soak Me, I'll Burn Them follows Nona, a woman in her mid-60s who has lived alone for a decade after taking revenge on her ex-lover. She drifts into Pichilemu, a small coastal town in Chile, and soon after her arrival, a mysterious fire breaks out. Nona, who can be called a guerrilla in her twilight period, finds solace in arson. While neighbors suspect the culprit, the police investigate. This is a bizarre drama about an anarchistic female warrior inspired by the director's real grandmother, Josefina Ramirez. The director keeps her aesthetic methodology that blurs the line between documentary and fiction. Her screenplay also blends actual events with recreated events from Josefina's life. The film presents Josefina's life, captured through coarse, low-definition video footage, and Nona's dramatized story in parallel. Fiction emerges from reality, and reality serves as a footnote to explain fiction. The film challenges cinematic grammar with its strong characters, mysterious plot, and familiar yet unique aesthetic approach. (JANG Byungwon)
