Based on a true story, UNTOLD HERSTORY is about a tragedy in Taiwan’s modern history. After being displaced from mainland China, Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist government committed many atrocities of white terrorism in the name of purging and edifying the left, one of which was the creation of a concentration camp on a remote island called Green Island in southeastern Taiwan. More than 100 women and men, most of them still young students, were imprisoned for reading banned books, speaking out in favor of the left, or meeting with blacklisted figures, and were subjected to severe labor, indoctrination, and forced to live in misery. Records indicate that 26 women were executed, though some say the number was more than that. Similar to South Korea’s Samchung re-education camp in the 1980s, the victims of the tragedy remained silent for many years, and even the Taiwanese government considered the case taboo and left it as a buried story. While director Zero CHOU occasionally overdramatizes, the film is a heartfelt requiem to the many people who have been victimized and forgotten in an age of barbarism. (CHUN Jinsu)
