Director Yorgos GOUSSIS’s latest documentary, ARM WRESTLER, offers a unique perspective on arm wrestling, a subject rarely covered in the film. This film is an extended version of his previous short documentary, The Arm Wrestler (2020). The film follows the life of Panos, the director’s brother, a 30-year-old cafe owner and aspiring actor. Although Panos occasionally works as a clown or magician at events, his true passion is arm wrestling, a sport that takes up much of his time but yields no financial rewards. The film is structured into two parts: Panos’s ordinary daily life, which does not involve arm wrestling, and his passionate involvement in the sport. While Panos sometimes gets upset with inexperienced organizers of arm wrestling events, the sport is everything to him. The documentary relies on an observational style, and the fact that the director and Panos are brothers allows for a more intimate and personal exploration. (CHUN Jinsu)
