Review

The most horrific incident in modern Taiwanese history must be the 1947 "February 28 Incident," carried out by the Kuomintang, who came across from mainland China. Officially, at least 28,000 native Taiwanese were killed according to the Taiwanese government. This political repressive period, from this point until the lifting of martial law in 1987, is called the "White Terror." Films such as A City of Sadness (1989) by director Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Prince of Tears (2009) by director Yonfan, Detention (2019) by John Hsu have depicted the most tragic period of Taiwanese history. And A Foggy Tale by director Chen Yu-Hsun follows the way. While Hou and Yonfan borrowed epic drama in style, and Hsu employed horror, the experienced director Chen constructed a human drama blending melodrama and comedy. The film is a story of a desperate struggle of Yue, a young girl who searches for her brother's body after his death during the White Terror, and her growing friendship and solidarity with Kung-tao, a former soldier turned into a rickshaw driver, as they navigate the unclear world covered with thick fog. Though somewhat old-school as a work of the long-time experienced director, the film delivers profound emotional impact. It swept four awards, including Best Feature Film and Best Screenplay, at last year's 62nd Golden Horse Awards. (MOON Seok)
