In discussions of socially and politically engaged documentaries, it is often assumed that a good film maintains a certain distance between the director and the subject. Pascale Bodet, however, breaks with this convention, joining forces with her protagonist to confront state bureaucracy. Amr, an Egyptian who has lived in France for 17 years, has yet to obtain a residence permit. One of the challenges he faces is the French language. Though he lacks proficiency, Amr communicates in his own unique way, drawing on whatever means are available to him—and in the process, the documentary at times becomes an offbeat comedy. While addressing the serious and urgent issue of immigration in major cities, Bodet approaches her subject with respect, warmth, and a lightness of touch. Above all, the relationship between director and protagonist—at times resembling friendship, even camaraderie—suggests that empathy can move situations forward, and that cinema itself can become a tool for that purpose.
