The Hotel directed by WANG Xiaoshuai, takes on the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, when the director stayed in a hotel in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on holiday during the Chinese New Year period in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic was already underway, so he planned to make the film and exploit the situation. The Hotel uses the external environment, with COVID-19 as the main element of the story. It simultaneously shows life's tragic irony and its abject human conditions. While the characters, including the protagonist, a young woman named Sova, her mother, a middle-aged couple from Wuhan, a renowned painter from Hong Kong, a visually impaired middle-aged man, and a young Thai man who looks after him, suffer from the invisible external enemy, COVID-19, also, friction is created between them too. Despite the film being made on the spur of the moment, The Hotel shows considerable perfection because director Zhan Yuan was with his wife and screenwriter, Ning Dai, and Ning Yuanyuan, their daughter who played Sova in the film. Thanks to being made in an extremely limited environment, there has been a high appraisal commenting that WANG Xiaoshuai's past independent film virtues are seen. (MOON Seok)
