If we have the Confucian tradition, Westerners have Christianity. The characters in this film represent the confused inner world of Westerners who live on the fringes of Christian values and aristocracy. Nowadays, the term 'noblesse oblige' sounds positive, like an affirmation of the traditional class-based order. The word 'bourgeois' still has both envious and critical connotations. The elegant dinner parties that film characters always pursue are frequently ruined. During the meal, soldiers break in, guests arrive on a different date than invited, or the host doesn't show up, stopping them from eating. Dinner parties are an important ritual for middle-class Westerners, where they show off their refined manners and wealth. By delicately depicting bourgeois life through the characters' polite conversations, manners, luxurious clothing, tableware, and furnishings, BUÑUEL declares the end of old-fashioned values and lifestyles.
