Titles thought to be missing from the extensive collection of Chilean director Raúl Ruiz’ films are still being discovered and added posthumously. Especially notable is the long-lost Socialist Realism, which had become legendary as its unfinished version was circulated illegally for years. Finally, after edited by director Valeria Sarmiento, it has taken its final form. The film blends documentary images with fiction to depict the clash of different political ideologies in Chilean society, by taking place before the 1973 military coup, when the socialist president Salvador Allende formed Popular Unity to unite the masses. It observes the working-class groups that surfaced in the process and the intellectuals who represented the power and bourgeoisie on the other hand. Taking on the form of a satirical reading, the film uses humor to demonstrate how ideology collapses when confronted with the demands of ordinary people and the realities of life. (Sung MOON)
