Review

While predicting what will happen tomorrow is beyond anyone’s ability, in the world portrayed in Embryo Larva Butterfly, looking ahead to the future is entirely impossible. In this cinematic world, time does not flow linearly like in ours; it flows arbitrarily. For instance, today is in 2005, but the following day is in 2023, and the day after that is in 2030. The wife attending her husband’s funeral in 2037 finds herself in 2007 the next day, asked by her husband, “Where were you yesterday?” Similarly, the pregnant wife in 2023 cannot even recall whether she gave birth the following day in 2030. The film utilizes the unpredictable flow of time to incorporate dark humor at times, yet overall, it is a philosophical and contemplative science fiction that, through minimalist and delicate descriptions, delves into the paradox of time, ponders fate, and critically examines capitalism and modern technology. And among them, what the film emphasizes most is human emotion and will. The couple, Penelope and Isidoros, repeatedly meet and separate as time moves forward and backward. However, they hold onto their emotions and resist resigning themselves to a fate beyond their control. Tomorrow is unknown, but perhaps today is what matters most. (MOON Seok)
