It has been 10 years since the Sewol ferry disaster, and while there has been only a handful of feature films about it produced, numerous documentaries have been made. This is because the subject matter is considered too burdensome to tell the story through dramatization. When We Bloom Again is the first feature film produced by the Documentary Group PINKS specializing in social documentaries, but it is more significant because 4/16 Sewol Families for Truth and a Safer Society participated as one of the co-producers. The story is led by Byung-ho and Soo-hyun, who lost their daughter, Kyung-eun, in the Sewol ferry tragedy. Byung-ho, who stood up for the truth and punishment of those responsible for the disaster, has become exhausted and short-tempered in the midst of the long struggle. One day, he collapses and even loses his memory. His wife, Soo-hyun, is already having a hard time and finds it difficult to deal with her husband too, who causes trouble everywhere. When We Bloom Again shows that the wounds of that day remain festering and unhealed through the intimate stories of the bereaved families and activists. Byung-ho, whose mind is still trapped inside the Sewol ferry, may represent all the Sewol ferry disaster’s bereaved families. At the same time, the film also expresses the hope that the child victims will bloom again somewhere, just like cotton flowers will burst into bloom. (MOON Seok)
