Review

An estimated 5 million Afghans have fled war to Iran, where their legal status is precarious, often face deportation, and are separated from their families. This film tells the tearful story of an Afghan refugee family's resettlement in Iran in three chapters: Mohammad in 2001, Leila in 2011, and Qasem in 2021. Mohammad, a timid boy, is close to his family, but outside, he is harassed by the police and forced into unpaid labor. A decade later, Leila is working as a maid for an Iranian family with a young son, but she must hide her involvement with her husband to keep her job. Another decade later, an aging Qasem is about to receive his Iranian citizenship, but when he learns of his son's misfortune, he falls into a pit of despair. When will they ever truly "settle down"? And are all the costs they have paid so far not worth it? (CHUN Jinsu)
