Broken Voices, the debut feature by Czech filmmaker Ondřej Provazník, is inspired by the real case involving the Prague children's choir Bambini di Praga in the 1990s. At its center was the choir’s conductor, Bohumil Kulínský, who sexually abused minors in the ensemble. The film begins when twelve-year-old Karolína is accepted into the choir she has long admired. Rather than focusing on the assaults themselves or on the incident as such, the film subtly and incisively portrays the many forms of oppression and manipulation exercised under the perpetrator's control before the abuse takes place. In doing so, Broken Voices sets itself apart from many post-#MeToo works focused on sexual violence. (Molly KIM)
