Director Marta Popivoda has consistently focused on unraveling the traces of ideology as they surface through personal histories in audiovisual form, often through a layered use of archival materials. In her latest work, bodies shaped by ideology become a bridge between past and present. Sonja, a choreographer from Belgrade, led the final Slet* performance at the 1988 Youth Day festival, held just before the fall of the Berlin Wall and the outbreak of the Yugoslav wars. Ligia, a Black choreographer, travels to Belgrade for an artist residency program. There, she moves alongside Sonja and others of different ages, genders, and backgrounds, gradually coming to know one another through shared movement. The film shifts between past and present through the diary of a teenage girl, written during the Youth Day festival of May 1988. It embraces diversity across gender, form, movement, color, and modes of expression, while exploring the joy that emerges when individuals create movement together. Rather than simply remembering history, the film turns toward the present, connecting these reflections to contemporary protests unfolding in Serbia. It speaks to the ongoing question of freedom—both of the individual and of the crowd. (Sung MOON)
* Slet: A large-scale mass art and sports event organized to promote socialist ideology.
