Filmmaker Benita Raphan died by suicide on January 10, 2021, at the age of 58. Documentary director Alan Berliner constructed this film using audiovisual materials found on more than 40 hard drives left behind by Raphan. Rather than seeking to reveal the mystery of her death, the film turns its attention to reconstructing the life and work of an artist, along with the difficulties and pain that remained inseparable even during her heyday. Berliner was Raphan's mentor and reveals the connection between them through the film’s structure. Formally free in its approach, the film weaves together Raphan's footage, diaries, and interviews with family, friends, and acquaintances who knew her and worked with her to present the artist Benita Raphan, while also offering a farewell. At the same time, Berliner reflects on the mystery of art and creation, and on the suffering that at times marks the lives of artists. (Sung MOON)
