In her book The Mushroom at the End of the World (2015), Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing introduces the concept of "assemblage" and explains it as follows: The question of how the varied species in a species assemblage in uence each other—if at all—is never settled: some thwart (or eat) each other; others work together to make life possible; still others just happen to nd themselves in the same place. Assemblages are open-ended gatherings. Breathing and Whispering acts as a brief report, exploring how cinematic “assemblage” forms and functions. Drifting between the forests in Jeju-do and the parks on the outskirts of Seoul, the film observes each environment. And through this, the following emerge as an uneven gathering: human and non-human elements; natural landscapes and artificial constructs; stationary things and moving things; things captured in images and things rendered in words. Within the process, an arbitrary "assemblage" unfolds, where various elements momentarily interconnect and exchange. (KIM Byeonggyu | Film Critic)
