Set in a convenience store, AnyMart portrays a space where consumers purchase products arranged under a strict system beneath bright lights and receive manualized service. The protagonist, Sakai, is an employee who works within fixed regulations, almost like a component of the store’s system. He seems to find his own sense of satisfaction within those confines. However, when a new employee, Ogawa, joins the store and begins to question these rules and seek change, the clockwork-like functioning system cracks open. The staff all start to behave strangely, and what was once a peaceful routine turns into an unpredictable situation. The defining feature of this film is how it shifts a thoroughly mundane atmosphere into comedy one moment, and then into horror the next. Since these swifts occur at such unexpected moments and from unpredictable angles, their impact is doubled. At the core of these changes lies a terrifying lust for profit—a force that permeates even the local convenience store. Though barely visible beneath the store’s bright lights, this logic operates behind the scenes, capable of overturning the hardships of life in an instant. Director Iwasaki Yusuke conceived the film while observing his father run a convenience store. He recalls that his father "became almost inanimate and lost his humanity" after taking over the store. The film stars renowned Japanese actor Sometani Shota and Karata Erika. (MOON Seok)
