Having welcomed 12 million spectators last year, professional baseball is asserting its presence as Korea's most popular sport—a future no one could have predicted when it was launched in 1982. At the time, the match quality was also poor. Then appeared a Zainichi Korean pitcher Chang Myeong-bu (Chang Akio), who displayed a skill level far surpassing that of the league at the time and set remarkable records that remain unbroken to this day. Signed by the Sammi Superstars in 1983, in a season in which each team played 100 games, he started 48 games, completed 38 of them, and won 28 of them. With two wins earned in relief appearances, he recorded a total of 30 wins. Despite such extraordinary records enough to call him legendary, Chang Myeong-bu is remembered in Korea with rather negative associations. From the early days of his debut, when he was called “Raccoon” for throwing with a nonchalant attitude, to his eventual expulsion for methamphetamine use, Chang Myeong-bu remained a perpetual outsider in Korea. Chang Akio, Fallen leaves in sea is a documentary that reconstructs his life from the perspective of his half-brother, Chang Yong-bu. Unlike his older brother, who became a baseball player to avoid discrimination as a Zainichi Korean, he chose the path of the yakuza and lived far from his brother. Yet he retraces his memories of his only blood relative and recounts Chang Myeong-bu's life in a subdued voice. To support his narration, the film also weaves together diverse testimonies from seniors and juniors from Chang's hometown, fellow baseball players, and personnel from the Korean baseball scene. Chang Myeong-bu died of heart failure at his home in 2005. A note found beside him at the time read, "Fallen leaves do not resent the autumn wind." This film is about a baseball player who once radiated his presence, the story of a Zainichi Korean who was not accepted even in his ancestral homeland. But above all, it is the story of a man who embraced his unfortunate life and fell like a leaf. (MOON Seok)
