The greatest enemy of the modern Korean family in the 21st century is money. Families torn apart, collapsed, destroyed and disappeared because of money is a societal issue. The worst victims here are children. Stories of children being sacrificed together with adults due to family debts is heartbreaking. Director Kim Yongcheon’s A LITTLE LIFE begins within this context. The young girl Eunha is the protagonist who survives alone after plunged into a reservoir in the family car as her debt‑ridden parents drove the car into it. Yet survival is not necessarily a blessing, as she must now endure life without parents. Her aunt Ja‑young reluctantly takes her in but, unprepared, fails to care for her properly, leading Eunha to a child protection center. It is how the film's true story begins. Eunha meets Bora, who looks after her, and slowly begins to release the weight in her heart. Told from Eunha's perspective, the film calls for greater attention and responsibility toward children trapped in disintegrating families. It is deeply moving when we watch Eunha prove her own existence through the "Fish Dance" while she is in endless despair. Above all, the poignant performance of the child actor, Park Soo‑ah as Eunha shines so brightly. (MOON Seok)
