Two mothers of different nationalities and their adopted son come together over the course of an evening, where their individual emotions and memories are summoned. Efforts to soften the awkwardness can feel excessive, and tensions surface at surprisingly trivial moments. Yet the characters do not hesitate to lay bare their feelings. Particularly striking is the film’s distinctive view of the relationship between the two mothers, while its stable framing and consistent visual contrasts give greater clarity to its restrained charm.
