Review

77 Minutes is a meta-film that shows the filmmaking process, and at the same time reads like a making-of documentary about the very film itself. In fact, the fantasy elements in the film, such as the spirit and the god of cinema, may be nothing more than a justification for the director to plan a new film. In other words, it feels like a process of persuading oneself to make a new film by using these elements as a pretext. For that reason, the protagonist Kim Yeonhwa and this film's director Jung Harin inevitably dissolve into one another. Since her glorious debut with Miss Cherry's LOVE PUZZLE in 2013, Jung has not made a second feature film, and her reasons are indirectly revealed through Yeonhwa. Most likely, Yeonhwa's story—that she endlessly repeated the cycle of writing scripts, casting, making revisions, and ultimately seeing the film fall apart—reflects Jung's real life. Perhaps that is why the process of Yeonhwa looking for the vanished actress Jo Ah-young while envisioning a new film comes across as particularly desperate. Upon reflection, rendering a sorrowful situation into a cheerful and bright comedy is one of the film's greatest virtues. Fresh are the performances of actors who are not often seen in films, such as Lee Yunji in the role of Yeonhwa and Hong Soohyun, who plays both the spirit and Jo Ah-young. Another surprising fact is that the running time of this film is, indeed, 77 minutes. (MOON Seok)
